Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the abnormal functioning of the heart or blood vessels that leads to an increased risk of a heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and other problems decreasing the quality and length of one’s life. CVD has been the number one cause of death for women in Wisconsin for the past 30 years.
Know Your Risk
You are at a greater risk if you:
- Smoke
- Have high blood pressure
- Have high cholesterol
- Have a family history of heart disease
- Are inactive, have poor eating habits, or do not maintain a healthy weight
- Eat a lot of salt
- Are excessively stressed, angry, or sad for a prolonged period of time
- Have diabetes
