How is Cancer Affecting Wisconsin?
The American Cancer Society, along with the Wisconsin Cancer Reporting System at the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, the Wisconsin Division of Public Health and the Wisconsin Cancer Council put out a 2003-2004 report for cancer facts and figures in the state of Wisconsin. In this report, cancer topics and statistics were addressed, as well as the predicted trends in incidence and mortality rates. According to the report, 25,800 new cases of cancer were reported in Wisconsin in 2003. Breaking that number down, 70 people a day were diagnosed with cancer. The report noted that approximately 10, 800 people would die of cancer in the year 2003. New statistics from the ACS conclude that 26,340 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Wisconsin in 2005. What Types of Cancer are Affecting Wisconsin the Most? Lung cancer, according to the report, was the leading cause of cancer deaths among both men and women in the state of Wisconsin. From 1996-2000, an average of 1,576 men and 1,101 women died from lung cancer each year. |
