- Approximately 150-200 babies born each year in Wisconsin can be identified as being negatively affected by prenatal alcohol exposure.
- Prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading cause of preventable mental retardation in the United States.
- Diagnosis can be very difficult. The symptoms vary in severity and may include physical defects, cognitive deficits, behavior problems. A team of professionals is needed including a physician, psychologist, speech pathologist and physical or occupational therapist. Diagnosis is easier if the birth mother confirms alcohol use during pregnancy. Many children need special education services, and few are able to live independently as adults. Some become involved in criminal activity and are incarcerated.
