2008 GRANT RECIPIENTS Aspirus Women's Health Granted $1,000 for a program designed to improve the identification, care and services to women with postpartum mood disorders, including postpartum depression. This will allow regional educational offerings on this topic and the ability to produce a DVD/CD for professionals who are involved in providing community-wide services and support to this population of frequently underserved, at-risk women. Material will cover information about social, financial, cultural and other risk factors. Beaver Dam Community Hospital Granted $700 for Dodge County's Annual Focus on Women event. three speakers will focus on (1) yoga and deep breathing as a form of relaxation (2) attitude and our actions/reactions, (3) healthy meal planning ideas with a cooking demo, and (4) a journey from lessons learned and self-esteem to goal attainment. They will have exhibits, screenings, and educational materials available as well as provide a meal. Breast Cancer Family Foundation Granted $700 to print "Caring Message Cards" - mammogram reminder cards that students/participants can give to their mothers. Care Net Pregnancy Resource Center Granted $500 to support programs that assist those facing unplanned pregnancy (free pregnancy tests and counseling, education about their options, post abortion support and help); strengthen families through the parenting program (LEAP-Learning and Earning as Peers Program); and, educate teens about risks associated with early sexual activity (STDs and their connection with cervical cancer, infertility, terminal illnesses like AIDS, contraceptives and their links to breast cancer, high blood pressure, weight gain and personality changes, and other results of risky behavior). Center for Patient Partnerships - UW Law School Granted $1,000 to translate to Spanish a guide for comprehensive cancer survivorship care planning for women diagnosed with cancer. The guide will help women make more informed medical decisions, reduce exposure to health-related financial risk, and live fully after a cancer diagnosis. Gilda's Club Madison, Wisconsin Granted $1,000 to support the 'Experience Gilda's' Sessions for health care and support services personnel. Sessions are designed to allow physicians, social workers, nurses, home health agency personnel, support agency personnel, parish nurses and others to truly see what it will be like to attend programming at Gilda's Club. Sessions will allow those who attend to see what an individual member's plan could include, and how the support groups work. The goal being that the partners will feel confident in making referrals after these sessions. Grantsburg Women Working Together Granted $500 for a wellness retreat to stimulate a holistic approach to women's personal health issues and equip rural women with the skills they need to sustain a healthy lifestyle. Will provide information on local resources, encourage proactive healthcare, provide screenings, introduce women to healthcare professionals, supply follow-through materials, help establish a support system through networking, encourage creative outlets, and foster health self image. Horizon Home Care & Hospice, Inc. Granted $500 for a Women's Healing Retreat bi-annually in the spring and fall by the Horizon Grief Resource Center. Workshops will focus on the needs of women in the community who have experienced a loss and are looking for ways to process their feelings in a safe and open environment. Each participant will be guided on an individual journey using collage, guided meditation, free writing, interview techniques and poetry. Marathon Co. Family Resource Centers - Athens, Edgar, Stratford, and Spencer Granted $750 for the 10th Annual Women's Event held in June 2008. Program is attended by approximately 170 rural and sometimes isolated farm women. The focus is on women's health highlighted by a speaker with the message of reaching out to others as well as a positive approach to life. Margot Olmstead Care Fund c/o WWWP Granted $250 to help with financial assistance for health related services for uninsured or under insured women who are at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. Price County Women's Health Alliance Granted $500 for an annual event in March in conjunction with American Heart Association's "Go Red" campaign. The event will provide women in Price County with educational information and materials regarding heart health. The program consists of a dinner, a brief presentation by a healthcare professional on ways for women to achieve and maintain a healthy heart, and information specific to how women's symptons differ from men's. Educational phamplets and brochures will be available as well as displays on heart health issues. Stillwaters Cancer Support Services Granted $750 for the expansion of "Gentle Waves" retreats for women currently in or have completed cancer treatment. The half day retreat is designed to provide therapeutic exercise to cancer patients and survivors. Retreats will include Yoga and Meditation on the pier, peddle kayak preparation and skill training, kayak trip, group discussion and lunch. Partnership: City of West Allis, WWWP, Aurora Women's Pavilion Granted $600 for the 10th Annual "Reflections of Wellness" for Women. The half day event will be held in February. The morning event features a healthy breakfast, numerous exhibitors and health screenings, and two special speakers. Event focuses on self care of mind, body and spirit. It seeks to empower women to become strong advocates for their own health and and the health of their family. Riverside Medical Center Granted $250 to enhance current mother/daughter puberty information classes titled "Especially for Girls: What's Happening to Me?" by adding information on nutrition and self-esteem based on feedback from previous attendees. A dietitian will plan the lunchtime offering and speak to the group. A therapist will address self-esteem issues. Simpson Street Free Press Granted $500 to publish a new series of articles in their Health Section about health concerns specific to women. The reporters writing these articles are young women students, and articles are written to target a young audience. Funds will support stipends, expenses, printing, in-school/community delivery and web-site support. Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care Granted $500 to develop and distribute a Spanish-language version of "Prescription for a Healthy Future", which will provide linguistically and culturally appropriate health information for Latinas. 2007 GRANT RECIPIENTS Allied Wellness Center, Inc., Madison Granted $700 to help host two facilitated discussion sessions at the Allied Wellness Center. The sessions are designed to teach young women about HIV, STIs, and safe/reduced risk sexual practices (including abstinence) as well as to facilitate dialogue between the girls and the adult women in their lives. These programs target teens and adult women in NE Wisconsin and feature information about the growing threat of cancer. The grant will be used to produce the “Caring Message Cards” for this program. Jane Cremer Foundation, Inc., Racine Granted $1,250 to help sponsor and support four educational outreach programs during 2007 that will be focused on educating women about female related cancers. Programs will be held in Racine and Kenosha and will target women in the African American and Hispanic communities. The Elizabeth House, Madison Granted $2,410 to provide food, infant massage training, parenting resources and transportation for the spring and fall sessions of the Circle of Parents Support Group. The Circle of Parents is a pilot peer support group for single moms, both residents of The Elizabeth House maternity home and low-income, single moms living in the community. Franciscan Skemp-Sparta, Sparta Granted $1,000 for the Monroe County Women's Health Night to be held September 18, 2007 with the theme: "Healthcare: A World of Difference". Individuals in attendance will learn about a health topic specific to women and health related services in the area. They will also receive free or low-cost health screenings and sample healthy foods. Marathon County Family Resource Centers, Wausau Granted $1,000 for the 7th Annual Women's Event to be held in June. The program is attended by rural women. Individuals attending will receive health screenings, informational materials and referrals to health services that promote the health and well-being of women and their families. The objective of the workshop series is to provide a safe and empowering environment for young survivors to support their mind, body and spiritual needs as they make their journey through diagnosis and treatment to survival. Western Dairyland EOC Inc., Independence Granted $1,000 to provide toolkits to low-income child care providers and to child care providers who serve low-income families. The toolkits are intended to teach practical business expertise to child care providers so they can maintain a stable and healthier environment for children. Yahara House, Madison Granted $1,250 for an overnight Wellness Retreat and Seminar for Women Living with Mental Illness who have difficulty accessing educational opportunities in the community. The retreat will focus on education around prevention of breast cancer, cervical cancer, and osteoporosis. 2006 GRANT RECIPIENTS Beaver Dam Community Hospital, Beaver Dam Granted $1,500 to help fund the 11th Annual Focus on Women event to be held April 18th, 2006. Breast Cancer Family Foundation, Green Bay Granted $900 for their School and Community Educational Programs. Programs target teens and adult women in NE Wisconsin and feature information about the growing threat of cancer. The grant will be used to produce the “Caring Message Cards” for this program. LEAP allows women to earn things they need for their families-diapers, vitamins, etc…Care Net provides these items free to their low-income clients. Counseling Center of Watertown, Watertown Granted $1,000 to introduce the program “Positive Thinking: A Woman’s Healthy Outlook” to Jefferson County low-income residents with no health insurance, who are also suffering from depression. Group Health Cooperative of SC WI, Madison Granted $500 for “More Than Just the Blues Support Line & Support Group”. This group serves mothers and their families who are experiencing perinatal depression. Jane Cremer Foundation, Inc., Racine Granted $1,000 to help sponsor and support four educational outreach programs that will focus on educating women about female related cancers. These programs target African American and Hispanic women in the Racine and Kenosha area. Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Granted $500 for partial support of the educational outreach component of a major research project focusing on the Female Athlete Triad. St. Croix Regional Medical Center, St. Croix Falls Granted $1,000 to help pay for their 12 th Annual Women’s Health Conference to be held on March 23 rd, 2006. Wisconsin Association of the Deaf, Waukesha Granted $1,000 to fund planning meetings and collaboration efforts between volunteer deaf advocates and local domestic violence and sexual assault programs. 2005 GRANT RECIPIENTS Franciscan Skemp-Sparta, Sparta Granted $1,000 to fund the Monroe County Women's Health Night with the theme: "Healthcare: A World of Difference". Milwaukee Commission on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault, Milwaukee Granted $1,100 to conduct a 2-part needs assessment of the community. CareNetPregnancyCenter, Ladysmith Granted $2,000 for their LEAP (Learning and Earning as Peers) program. LEAP allows women to earn things they need for their families-diapers, vitamins, etc. Care Net provides these items free to their low-income clients. ARC Fond du Lac Treatment Services for Women & Children, Fond du Lac Granted $1,500 for a 2-day retreat for 12 women enrolled in their substance abuse treatment service. Franciscan Skemp-Sparta Campus Granted $800 to support the 7th Annual Community Women's Health Night of Monroe County. HELP of Door County, Sturgeon Bay Granted $2,000 to produce a film documenting and celebrating the process through which the women involved in the Out of the Shadows project were able to transcend their victimization of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Interfaith Older Adult Programs, Inc., Milwaukee Granted $1,500 to recruit/train six people with backgrounds in family care giving or older adult care as class facilitators. Family Enhancement, Madison Granted $1,500 for the "More Than Just the Blues" program which supports mothers experiencing the symptoms and challenges of perinatal depression. The Elizabeth House, a division of CareNet Pregnancy Center, Stoughton Granted $715 to create printed materials to mail to pregnancy centers, adoption agencies, social workers and others who can refer future residents to the new 10-bed facility opening in late 2004. Center for Healthy Communities, Medical College of WI, Milwaukee Granted $1,500 for a seminar for female residents of four Milwaukee public housing sites to raise their awareness of breast cancer prevention and breast health. |
